#Cooking Contest #Nasi Briyani

On last Sunday, we members at World Deaf Mission Center at Puchong were having the cooking contest. The contest is Nasi Briyani.

Nasi Briyani is a rice-based dish made with spices, rice(usually basmati) and chicken, mutton, fish, eggs or vegetables. The name is derived from Persian word which means 'fried' or 'roasted'. 

Briyani was believed to have been invented in the kitchen of the Muslim Mughal Emperors. It is very popular in South Asia and is a key element of the South Asian cuisine. Huderabad, Malabar, Delhi, Agra, Dhaka, Kashmir, Kolkata, Lucknow and Lahore, are the main centres of briyani cuisine. 

I joined Team B with brothers and sisters in Christ. What a wonderful contest I have experienced. After weeks by weeks finding the perfect Nasi Beriyani cooking in YouTube. and I ended up not so sure how to make it. Luckily the help of my brother in Christ, we all are able to progress the cooking Nasi Beriyani out well.

Now I know how to cook Nasi Beriyani. Hopefully I can cook for you someday :D

Remember I have mentioned I have won movie Free Pass to The Flu show? Well, last week Friday I chose the movie and share it to my FaceBook in the morning. When it came to close my working hours office, while I was waiting outside office, there this email has beeped to my mobile and I take a look.

Yeah. I have won the FREE MOVIE from Klips.my. Surprise for me. I never win any such before. So I whatssap Selina about it and we were going to collect the tickets at SAYS.my

On 20th Sept 2013, we both went to find the SAYS.com office at 1 Tech Park at Bandar Utama yet it is an hideout office. Then we have arrived there and got a security guard to get us the pass to lift. It was great to walk through the building, very structured one! And yet we were still on the search to the SAYS.my office.

#Surprise #Invitation #P1 Event

Last week, my friend Selina has asked me to join the Invitation to the P1 Event of their 5th Anniversary for bloggers which was held at their GreenPacket1 Headquater Office at Jalan Templer, Petaling Jaya. She sent me the link and I got and made the RSVP to the event on Wednesday, 18th Sept 2013.

Until yesterday was a new thing for me to experience the event as a blogger for the first time. I used to know the GreenPacket1 office but never to take a real time to experience their organization. I brought my man as my guest whilst Selina brought her friend, James.

When we have arrived there by 7pm and showed them my RSVP. We got freebies and entered the hall in the 11th floor. It was nice hall in the office. Thank goodness James can interpreted for us during the event since all of us are Deaf. It was a quite an experience after all.

We were given some brief of the introduction P1 and everyone of us took group photo. We even were asking whether we were hungry or play the games first. The first thing was we all were in so hungry. And we were leaded to the dinner they have prepared for us.

When they leaded us to the place, I thought it was a hall something like but we ended up to the top roof and yes it was the top with welcoming us to the dinner having the beautiful colourful of lights and balloons and everything.

Breaking the Silence

PETALING JAYA: Imagine not being able to hear a thing while your teacher gives lessons to the rest of the class.

You strain to lip-read as you scribble down whatever is projected on the LCD screen.

To avoid lagging, you borrow your friends' notes and later consult your teacher about the lesson, using only a pen and paper to communicate.

This is what a typical day is like for a deaf university student.

Fakhrul Razzi, 24, who has just completed a diploma in Business Management, shares the problems he faced as the only deaf student in his public university.

"Sometimes, lecturers teach without visual aids because it is an inconvenience to prepare the material. This means I have to approach my classmates for help or else I will be left behind," said Fakhrul.

The lack of basic infrastructure like LCD projectors in classrooms also hampers learning for the deaf.

Fakhrul, who mostly communicates with his classmates through writing, said interacting and socialising were among the hardest challenges he faced as a student.

"It is difficult to keep up with my friends who can hear but I take it in my stride," he said in relation to things that were lost in translation.

Fakhrul rarely uses the free sign-language interpreting service provided by the Malaysian Federation of the Deaf (MFD) because of the interpreter's travel costs that he has to bear and the availability of interpreters on short notice.

"Universities should strive to provide interpreters, or at least notes, LCD projectors and PowerPoint slides for disabled students," said Fakhrul, who one day hopes to open his own advertising and marketing company.

Even though deaf students are faced with many barriers, they can still overcome hurdles and do well in education.

"There are those who manage to be on the Dean's list. We also have two deaf students who are currently pursuing their Master's degree," said MFD president Mohamad Sazali Shaari.

The MFD also advocates for facilities for the deaf in universities.

"Ideally, there should be an availability of interpreters and facilities such as internet connections and video chat services for the deaf," Sazali added.

"There is a need for English interpreters as many classes are conducted in English," said Farhan Kamarzaman, 23, a deaf student currently pursuing his diploma in the Multimedia University.

When it comes to seeking higher education, the deaf are left in a dilemma.

"Sign language interpreters need to be at a higher level or on par with the deaf student. For example, a deaf PhD student requires an interpreter with similar qualifications.

"The interpreter needs to have proficiency of language and specific knowledge to interpret for conferences and research. It is hard to find someone suitable to fulfill this criteria," said Sazali.

Despite all obstacles, the deaf have come a long way in overcoming their disability.

"We have deaf individuals working both the public and private sectors. Many have good positions in their respective industries," says Sazali with a smile.

There this an another page to come in the StarOnline today. Surprising to know that more Deafs are interesting to keen on their studies to local Universities. I hope by this Breaking the Silence will help to promote Deaf Awareness publicly with the help of the Malaysian Federation of Deaf (MFD). By this way, the MFD should do more projects/ workshops to have the conduction to work with the Ministry of Education, Malaysia Government, local Government and Private University to provide the interpreter services and video chat online services for those Deafs are in need. The Deaf people who are interesting to take up some course to enrol a local university, they should make more awareness about Deafness publicly so they will give us space to have the respect equally by each other in class or everywhere.

Deafs should always seek the opportunity to meet their own criteria by asking the help from the MFD, the Ministry of Education to name a few in many ways to open up the road for their own benefits.

It is the time we change the world, our country Malaysia a better place to provide such services for the disable people, especially for the Deaf people.

PETALING JAYA: There are 55,000 hearing-impaired individuals registered with social welfare, but less than 20 are currently pursuing their education at a local university.

 “The primary obstacle is a lack of acceptable grades in languages, mostly English” says Mohamad Sazali Shaari, President of the Malaysian Federation of the Deaf (MFD), who is Deaf himself.

Yet, there is government-sponsored affirmative action in place that gives the deaf preferential university entrances.

On top of that, some private institutions are offering fee reductions ranging from 50-70% to Deaf students.

Yet most Deaf students end their studies after going through polytechnics and vernacular programmes.

Most universities expect credits in English and Bahasa Malaysia, at least, before a student is considered eligible. Overcoming the language barrier is an uphill task, says Sazali.

“If we cannot hear, how can we speak? The sounds you make are also important in language”

“Poorly-qualified teachers are the main problem. Often, they get sent to special schools and are tasked with Deaf education even though they are not proficient in sign language,” he said.

“So, how can they teach effectively?

“Teachers of the Deaf must be specially-skilled in extending the meaning of language to students."

"Otherwise, pupils will not be able to understand subtle linguistic nuances. Sometimes, teachers are switched and assigned to areas out of their expertise."

According to Sazali, teachers without any special education background or those with qualifications to teach other disabilities end up with Deaf students. In these cases, both teachers and students end up becoming victims, he said.

The recent Malaysian Education Blueprint also recognised the shortage of qualified Special Education teachers and the need for disabled-friendly facilities in schools.

To help fix the problem, all teachers will be provided basic special education training modules at IPGs (Institut Pendidikan Guru) and public universities.

Existing special education programmes will also be strengthened and additional initiatives will be undertaken such as forming partnerships with other organisations to help improve support for special needs students.

Sazali recommended that all teachers in Deaf schools be made to have sign language certification before being posted.

“Having only Special Education credentials for teachers is not enough if we want Deaf students to succeed in schools,” he says.

No reply to questions posed by The Star Online has been received from the Special Education Department of the Ministry of Education as to the predicament of teachers and Deaf students in schools and universities.

I am plucking this special paragraph knowing that Deaf are the only few to study in a few of local Universities. It is true that each of Deaf schools need the qualified Sign Language teacher with understanding of Deaf Cultural will be able to do the well in class. With my own experienced as a Deaf student in a Deaf school, there are experienced sign language teachers + understandable of Deaf Culture, they were able to teach the Deaf students (both the weak and brilliant in language). Of course some are not doing well in language, but excellent in art. Compared to unqualified sign language teachers and not really into the world of Deaf Cultural, it is admitted that they faced the difficulty in teaching the language to the Deaf students. To improve the standard of special education system especially in Deaf schools, they should know how to get along well with the students' weakness to the better way in class. To have the play + study in class is important all the time as the Deaf students get bore fast especially when it comes to language. Teacher has to get the point to make all of them to love language by telling some interesting of jokes, short stories, visitations and exchange ideas will help this system much to get improve. 

Deaf students are ain't that so weak, they just need your help with full attention of affection. They will be do well in studies and sports too.

Being a role of teacher should play the right attitudes : Patience, Understanding and Flexible = SUCCESSful teacher to the Deaf student. be PASSION!

In other hand, parents are also the main important role for a Deaf child. Parents should give the full attention of affection and patience toward a Deaf child in everything. Take a Deaf child like your own. Do not ever neglect her/him for being a handicap. A Deaf child is a wonderful who will always have the compassion to love you all in return. Parents who learn sign language to communicate with their Deaf child is the key to enable him/her to do well in language. She/He will be able to master the language fast with the right proper is given education by parents. Communication in the family house is very important to a Deaf child to see, understand and learn with everybody, he/she will be able to gain a lot of knowledges to share with, live a meaningful life, enjoy and love by its nature will have the bright side for her/his future. 

With such effective ways of system will bring the successful to enable More Deaf to get into local Universities.
